Building a Compost Bin Using Cheap Materials

A compost bin is a great tool when making compost. It may not be necessary but it can make the chore a lot easier. Wooden pallets are widely used for making a compost bin. This is the cheapest way to do it although not the most ideal because it the wooden pallets deteriorate easily.

Wooden pallets are very cheap; you can even find them lying around dumpsters or abandoned places. The only problem is in choosing the right kind of wooden pallet. Some wooden pallets are more resistant to decomposition than others. In time, you will learn to figure out which ones are made of good materials and which are not based on experience. Based on other people’s experience, softwood pallets are a bit more resistant than hardwood varieties.

The pallets need to be modified to achieve a suggested height of three feet. Taking care of a compost bin that is higher than three feet is generally a bit difficult. On the other hand, building a compost bin too small is impractical as only a small amount of compost will be produced. As for bigger bins, it can be hard to mix and turn the compost for aeration.

Building a compost bin is not something you decide to do on whim. You should carefully plan where to put your compost bin. Placing it too far from your home will only make the composting process and usage a tedious task to do, rather than provide a useful gardening implement. Placing it too near your home may also cause ill effects. It will occasionally attract pests and insects that might eventually find their way inside your home. At times it can also generate unwanted odors or ruin the look of your landscaping. Plan early as it might be too heavy to move around once the composting process has begun.

Local and legal matters should also be considered because some city ordinances require you to have a permit to build a compost bin in a residential area. You don't want your compost bin removed after you have put in all that hard work simply because you forgot to check with the authorities about the ordinances. What can even be worse is getting fined for setting up your compost in a residential area.

Composting is one way of giving back to the environment. Not only that, you will also get better plants from the compost. Building a compost bin will ensure that wastes in your household ranging from kitchen scraps to grass clippings will be useful for your garden.
